"There is no energy in a straight line" is
a Native American design principle and spiritual belief.
The system approach to office
cubicles is based relentlessly on the square, this results
in a rigid repetitive right angle layout and look. The use
of angled Curvicle spacers between our panels allows a
softer, more flowing layouts in small or large office
installations.
Waldron design directly addressed
the growing market need for innovative new system
furnishings with the Curvicle and Continuum design
concepts. A 'homier' work environment has been
clearly identified as the strongest trend that needs to be
met with any new product introduction and that has guided
all design decisions and strategies throughout. Creature
comforts like better lighting, more convenient
access to personal storage, and a place to display photos,
plants, and personal items are all examples of
bringing the home to work.
The bowed line or arc was
the fundamental design influence followed and it resulted
in a harmonious and flowing work environment that pleases
all of the senses simultaneously. When the option
existed that would allow a curve to be utilized over a
straight line, it was. When we could bend a surface rather
than leave it flat, we did. If an element could be
round or oval instead of flat, it was. We preferred hinges
with a rounded moment and feel and light switches that
were silent and round. The defocused lighting
results in long dramatic gradients and arcing shadows and
high lights that curve gently across the soft and sensual
surfaces.
A lot of attention was paid
to wire management with this system offering perhaps the
most access and overall capacity of any three inch gauge
system today. The spring mounted panel top wire tray
allows extensive rewiring of phone systems without
interrupting the work surfaces or removing any
peripherals. All of the panels have central vertical
tunnels crossed at the panel top, the table top beltways,
and across the panel bottoms. All tunnels connect
horizontally to the optional central tower where they can
conveniently be attached to building electrical services,
data drops, etc.
The panel system assembly is
as easy as it can possibly be with an ingenious connecting
toggle that controls the exact torque and fit at every
joint without the use of any tools.
Environmentally "green" steel is used.
Steel recycles more economically than any material
available today.
The overhead storage cabinets and shelves all have special
retainer clips that require manual release for removal to
prevent accidental up-thrust dismounting which could be
very dangerous.
The
entire system was design engineered to pass all ANSI BFMA
industry safety standards and it was approved without
corrections of any kind being needed.
The open, warm feeling of
Curvicle is, in part, the result of relieving and thus
releasing the inherently strong visual tension in a ninety
degree angle. The angles that result are conducive
to the new works style evolving today.
